Last Friday night staff and students came together at GMHBA Stadium to celebrate the Class of 22. It was a proud moment for many parents and students after six years of education. Well done Year 12's!
School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship Success Story with Bakers Delight
A positive experience for Paul Summers from Geelong High School under the guidance of Nikki Schammer. Nikki Schammer and her partner, both bakers, have taken over the business from Ian Oakley who owns the Leopold Bakers Delight. Nikki and her partner are the ones who have been training Paul and watching over him over his SBAT experience.
Paul currently works Sundays when he is available and Mondays. He has recently dropped off his Saturday shifts this time of year, to play cricket. He has an early start and is generally finished work at 10am. Paul also works occasional days on school holidays. Nikki would love to take on another school-based apprentice.
“If I could have another Paul I would be wrapped”, said Nikki. “He is a fantastic worker, is learning very quickly, is already running the bowl without too much help, thinks ahead and can see what’s needing to be done next and is a great team player. I don’t have anything negative to say about him and would love for him to come work with us fulltime, but I have a feeling his parents want him to finish school first. I understand that and will just wait and see how it all pans out. He fits in very well with us”.
Nikki is keen to find another suitable SBAT to add to the business.
Paul is enjoying his SBAT as he has discovered the benefits of finishing school, whilst gaining a Certificate 3 in Food Processing (Baking) being paid to learn new skills and working towards his future goal of becoming a baker.
“My school has been so helpful in organising it with the local TAFE. They make sure I complete all my written modules and never get overloaded. The SBAT is set up to make sure the time I spend in the bakery goes towards my subject credits, making it easier to get my apprenticeship”.
“Learning while being paid is awesome. I recommend the SBAT and Bakers Delight to others for sure! I can certainly say this is not just “a baking job” for me. I see a real career with Bakers Delight and would love to own my own bakery one day!”
Year 12 Media student, Phoenix Petterwood’s short film VACANT WORLD has been selected as a finalist for the Emerging Filmmaker Award at the North Bellarine Film Festival. Phoenix is the main actor, cinematographer, director, editor and producer in her film that explores a dystopian future. Well done!
Congratulations to Year 8 student Zac Tabb who competed in the Bunbury Classic Darts Tournament last week. This was a 3-day tournament in Bunbury, WA in which Zac competed in both singles and doubles competitions.
On the first day, Zac won the drawn doubles competition in which he was teamed with a partner who was drawn from a hat. Zac played well in the Junior and Men’s doubles competition on the second day and on the final day Zac just missed out on getting into the knockout stage after winning 4 matches in the Men’s Singles.
Congratulations again to Zac on this great effort and achievement.
Congratulations to our Year 12 Theatre Studies students who completed their external performance exam last week at Platform Arts.
The monologue performance examination contributes 25% to student’s overall study score for Theatre Studies in Year 12. Students select a monologue from a prescribed list that they must interpret for performance. Students are given the choice to either work as an Actor and Director to perform the monologue, or work as a designer to develop a creative design for a monologue in two of the following: set, costume, props, make-up, lighting and sound.
An exceptional and brave effort for all five of our Year 12 Theatre Studies students. Geelong High School is very proud of you.
Geelong High School students performed at the Geelong Show Schools Performance on 14th October. We had TWO bands perform. “Violet” Harry Jones, Wanda Dohl & James Elliott. “Blue Mascara” Bianca Janse Van Vuuren, Luke Doedel, Aspen Henshaw & James Elliott. They delivered outstanding musical performances on the day and were so well supported by the large audience. They really “rocked” the Geelong Show.
Our Year 11 VCAL students have been busily planning and preparing meals for the Geelong Food Relief charity as their major project in Semester 2 Personal Development Skills. They were given the task of helping those in our community who need a little extra support and they decided to help by planning and preparing meals in our GHS Foods room. They wrote and sent off sponsorship letters to local businesses with Coles Leopold accepting their proposal idea, a huge thank you to Mark in particular who is the store manager. They were also set the challenge or preparing each cooking session with a total budget of $50 to prepare 25 take away food container sized meals. So far the class has prepared, cooked and donated 31 containers of fried rice and penne carbonara and vegetables with another 25 planned for next week as their final week of cooking. We also had extra vegetables supplied via a donation to the Feed Me Surf Coast to supplement the pasta. Everyone involved in the sessions should be proud of their efforts from brainstorming ideas, writing letters, creating shopping lists and creating working to a budget, to leading the class cooking sessions, to being the last person to finish sweeping and wiping down the cooking room. We hope those in need in our local Geelong community can continue to benefit from the amazing service Geelong Food Relief provide and a few tasty meals provided by our Year 11 VCAL students. A huge congratulations to you all, I am proud of you all.

As we near the end of the year, it can become harder to keep motivation levels high. The weather plays a vital role in our energy and mood and we can use this to help our children get up that little bit earlier in the mornings, and prepare their bags and uniforms the night before.

Last Friday a small group of GHS students attended the I CAN Awetism Expo!! We all had a great day connecting with other students and schools and filling up our show bags with goodies.

Our Intermediate Girls cricket team played in the Western Metro finals yesterday coming second to Maribyrnong Sports Academy after beating Strathmore Secondary College and Gisborne High School. Best players on the day were Amarah Beach, Bianca Summers and Bella Middleton. Well done!

Teenage gatherings provide young people with important opportunities to interact and build on their social skills and experiences. Celebrations, partying and socialising are a fundamental rite of passage and one of the most important aspects of a young person’s life. However, it is possible for the best young person to get carried away with their peers and the euphoria of the moment.
For parents and caregivers, keeping your young person safe can at times feel daunting and is often a compromise and a challenge. Most teenagers try to do the right thing most of the time, but your leadership as a role model is crucial. Your child may appear to be physically large and mature, but this is not necessarily matched by their emotional maturity and responsibility in behaviour.
Every party has the potential to get out-of-hand as sometimes it’s hard for young partygoers to make good decisions. Communication and regular discussions are vital, particularly because young people are often faced with peer pressure to do things they prefer not to engage in. Hosting a celebration at home or at a venue can be a fun and memorable event but it is important to agree on the ground rules well before your event is announced to ensure there are no misunderstandings later on.
If hosting an event, you owe your guests a ‘duty-of-care’ and should ensure all reasonable steps are taken to keep partygoers safe. This Special Report provides caregivers with list of things to consider when planning a celebration. People Outdoors offer regular weekend and school holiday camps for kids (6-17 years) and adults (18+) with a disability, with departure points in both Melbourne and Ballarat.
We are a branch of the Australian Camps Association and also work in conjunction with the Positive Start Camping Program.
