A Message From The Principal #12
Principal Welcome Week 5, Term 3
I had the pleasure of attending the Winter Music Concert this week along with a large and very appreciative audience. Having missed the first concert I was looking forward to hearing and seeing what everyone was raving about. I can honestly say it was even better than I had hoped. The talent on display was amazing. I’ve seen many of our students perform over the years and the quality of the performances at this concert were up with the very best. There was an eclectic mix of individual performers, duets and bands performing everything from classical to rock, folk and contemporary music. There was even a little tribute to Olivia Newton-John. My congratulations to all performers and student MCs who organized and conducted the program. It was very strong evidence that we are bouncing back from the challenges of the covid years.
Stay safe

2022 VET Dance Concert Tickets
Miss Albrecht and I are excited to be planning the 2022 VET Dance showcase after a 2-year hiatus. Our 40 VET Dance students are working hard to present solo, small group and ensembles routines in Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Tap, Contemporary and Lyrical styles, and we would love your support. The show is Thursday 8th September, 6pm at Costa Hall and tickets are $20 (available at the GHS office). There are some exceptional performers, and we’d love to share with you what they’ve been working on!
We hope to see you there.

Hiroshima Paper Crane Competition
On Wednesday during lunchtime the Japanese Language Learning Area held a paper crane making House Spirit competition to see which House could make the most number of paper cranes during lunchtime. Moorabool and Leigh House finished equal. Well done Tigers and Tassie Devils!
However, the event was held to recognise something far more significant, Origami Paper Cranes are a symbol for world peace.
Some believe that if you fold 1000 paper cranes you will have a wish granted.
When the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1945 a young girl named Sadako was one of the survivors. She was just two years of age at the time. Unfortunately when she was 12, she went into hospital with Leukemia. (Cancer and other diseases were common side effects from the radiation after the bomb.)
Sadako was reminded about the origami cranes by her Dad, so while she was sick in hospital she folded as many as she could. Her wish was for World Peace. She used every bit of paper she could find including medicine wrappers. Unfortunately Sadako died before she could finish at age 12. (Her friends from her school continued to make cranes for her)
Ever since schools and people around the world fold paper cranes and send them to Hiroshima to display as a symbol of peace. On our school trips to Japan, we visit Hiroshima and the Peace Park and pay our respects to Sadako and all the people who lost their lives

GPEP - Urban Camp 2022
Last Thursday and Friday (04/08/2022 & 05/08/2022), the Geelong Positive Engagement Program (GPEP) students went to Melbourne for the Urban Camp. The camp focusses on homelessness and disadvantage in the community. Students participated in workshops with the Salvos and Intersection to gain a deeper understanding of homelessness, the causes and impacts while building their skills in empathy. Students also experienced the different cultural foods of Melbourne, took on the Edge Experience at Eureka Skydeck, explored the Queen Victoria Market and developed their independence, team work and communication skills while navigating the CBD in the Amazing Race. The GPEP crew had a wonderful time and learnt plenty on the way.
A big thank you to Jamilla Cranny and David Allitt for giving their time on the camp.

GPEP - Food & Clothing Drive
Hello Geelong High School families,
Year 9 Students in the Geelong Positive Engagement Program (GPEP) have been focusing on Homelessness and Disadvantage in the local community. Students have been “taking action” to positively impact on the issue through action research projects and some of these projects incorporate donation drives for the Salvation Army and Geelong Mums.
To support these initiatives, we are asking our Geelong High School community for any donations of blankets, unwanted hoodie jumpers (in good condition), personal hygiene products like small liquid soaps, deodorants, small tubes of toothpaste and liquid body washes.
Please see the fliers (attached) for further details on items for donation.
Any donations will be gratefully accepted at the General Office from the 11th of August until the 19th of August.
Thank you kindly
Lachlan Envall and the GPEP students.

At the Y we have a wide range of families who return each School Holidays as we have different activities and an exciting new program each holidays. We are hoping you can help us reach out to the local community!
Parentshop - Resilience in Our Teens
Parentshop has an upcoming interactive webinar for parents of teenagers, Resilience in Our Teens ™ – This webinar helps parents to identify, manage and reduce anxious habits in teenagers. Recent research has revealed that cognitive behavioural based, parent-led interventions can be as effective as seeing a psychologist for the early intervention in mild anxiety. Our parent course is delivered over three evening sessions with psychologist, Ruby Otero. The next course is commencing on the 1st September over 3 consecutive weeks, 6.30pm – 8.45pm. Parents that enrol will receive a free copy of my book, Engaging Adolescents.
